JUPITER, Fla. — There was a scattering of applause and plenty of backslaps as St. Louis Cardinals reliever Trever Miller walked into the clubhouse this morning, wearing an all-black running outfit and drenched in sweat. The most common question he faced was: “How’d you do?”
He did quite well, thank you very much.
Miller, as you may have read in the touching story by Joe Strauss in Friday’s Post-Dispatch, has found solace in running and found purpose in doing it for his daughter, Grace. (Really, you should read the story.) Miller ran the Spring Training Classic 10K here in Jupiter, Fla. The race winds through the Abacoa neighborhood and ends at the development’s epicenter — Roger Dean Stadium, spring training home of the Cardinals and Florida Marlins.
Miller said he ran the course in 44 minutes, 32 seconds. He called it a “personal best.”
When they did the math on how many minutes per mile that was — a touch more than seven minutes a mile — a few walked away shaking their heads. Kyle McClellan took the participatory medal Miller won and hung it on the corkboard in the middle of the clubhouse.
Asked if they should have a medal ceremony, McClellan said: “This is it.”
Miller only took the congratulations and started changing.
The 10K done, now he’s got a Cardinals workout to attend.
